5 Steps to Improve Your Happiness

In a world that is becoming increasingly isolated, and as moral values seem to be taken into question on a daily basis, how does one maintain their own personal happiness?  Do we attempt to simply block out and ignore everything that gets us down, thus leading a life of blissful ignorance?  Or do we engage with the negative, risking our happiness in turn?  This article will provide some suggestions about how to answer questions such as these.  It’s often difficult to navigate the winding road through this world and our individual lives, but we are here to provide some support and personal assistance.  We offer services in life coaching, business consulting, career coaching, and training for continuing education.  For over 30 years, Transformational Growth has been the best life coaching program in Rancho Cucamonga and we pride ourselves on our strong reputation with our clients.  However, let us attempt to answer this not-so-simple question: How can one improve their happiness?  

1. Don’t Let the Sun Go Down While You’re Still Angry

You may have heard a similar saying before, but it is no old wive’s tale.  It has been scientifically proven that if you go to sleep unhappy, you are much more likely to wake up with the same mood.  On the other hand, if you are happy or at least content by the time you go to sleep, you are likely to way up feeling the same way as well.  But can we really make sure that we are in a good mood before we go to bed every single night?  Maybe not, but we can absolutely try and, as we’ll see, that’s what matters the most.  Although we might not always have complete control over all of our emotions, it’s the effort to control them that counts.   

You may be wondering, “How can I go to bed happy while I’m in the middle of an argument with someone else?”  The most obvious solution is for you to try to resolve the disagreement before bedtime.  It’s even worth it to stay up a bit later than usual, as it will let you sleep much more soundly.  Although it may seem easier or tempting to give it some time, it usually just lets the entire problem fester.  If you can’t resolve the issue before bedtime, at least attempt to reach a temporary agreement, or to even just relax yourself.  Something as simple as reading, watching an episode of your favorite TV show, or praying can do this for you.  

2.Utilize Your Individual Strengths

It can often be difficult to even recognize your individual strengths, but once you have a general idea of what they are, it is fairly simply to utilize them.  For example, maybe you’re really good at organizing and scheduling things.  It be a good practice then, for you to maintain a calendar at your home, of upcoming events, or even yours and your family’s schedules.  Projecting this sort of organization onto a bigger scale of your life can give you a sense of structure and ultimately improve your happiness.  You might even be good at something like cooking.  In that case, you should cook as often as you can!  It will improve the happiness of everyone you cook for, thus improving your own happiness.  Utilizing your strengths in ways such as these will give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment.  This plays into what is called “positive psychology.”  A little bit of self-discovery in finding what your strengths are can really help you out in the long run.   

3. Nourish Your Body & Soul

Although it may sound cliché, it is very helpful advice indeed. Your body, soul, and mind are all connected, so it should come as no surprise that they can affect each other.  It is much more difficult to maintain a positive mind if your body is not healthy.  Therefore, on the contrary, if you eat healthy foods and good portions, then it is easier for you to nourish your mind.  We suggest a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and organic foods to give you the basis for a healthier soul.  Then, once your body is healthy and nourished, you can work on your psychological and spiritual health.  Praying, regardless of what religion of spirituality you subscribe to, is a great release of your thoughts, emotions, desires, and gratitudes.  Meditation works in a similar way.  Lastly, you may want to focus on producing positive thoughts on a regular basis.  If someone compliments you, accept it!  These kinds of things will breed positivity in your mind, body, and soul.  

4. Limit Your Complaining

It is no secret that those who linger on negative feelings start to sink into negative thoughts and outlooks.  If something happens that gets you down, you should do your best to move passed it.  It’s basically common knowledge that seeking revenge or retribution will often lead to more pain, so we do not suggest that by any means.  Instead, you should try to always look for the positive side of change, or of any situation.  If one spends all of their time complaining about a situation, they’ll eventually end up complaining about everything they do.  And, let’s be honest, nobody likes a negative person!  If you are at work, and complaining about obvious things that everyone else tries to ignore, you are only bringing down your fellow coworkers.  Thus, they will begin to associate you with negativity, dislike you, and then the cycle restarts.  Try to have a positive outlook and to uplift those around you.  It will not only make you more likeable, but it will always improve your own personal happiness.  

5. FaWearing a smile makes you more likeable and in turn, will improve your happiness!ke it Til You Feel it!

Although it may be difficult to do, it is extremely helpful to try and appear happy, even when you are not.  To be clear, if you are suffering from severe depression, you should seek help, or at least a friend or professional to confide in.  However, if you are simply discontent or have a nagging negative attitude, then you should try to wear a happy face.  As stated above, this will make you more likeable and in turn, improve your happiness.  It has been proven that just the act of smiling consistently can make you a happier person.
